VALLEJO, Calif. – Entering Saturday's Cal Pac Conference regular season finale, Cal Maritime only suffered one league loss, and that was to Simpson on the Red Hawks' home court in the Keelhaulers' inaugural conference road game.
Fast forward to the opposite end of league play, Cal Maritime avenged that loss by holding the Red Hawks to 37 percent shooting overall in a game the Keelhaulers won, 65-58, to finish conference play with the best record in Cal Pac history, extending their program-long nine-game win streak in the process on Senior Day.
Emily Newton led the Keelhaulers with team-high 20 points by hitting five of her six baskets from three, Tamana Sharifi and Alanis Sulivan each finished with 10 with the former collecting a game-high 11 rebounds to notch her eighth double-double of the year.
Even though Cal Maritime and Simpson each finished respective league schedules with one loss, Simpson will enter the Cal Pac Women's Tournament as the top seed because it also finished with one more league victory than the Keelhaulers; that result at Northern New Mexico, a team Cal Maritime did not have a chance to face throughout the last two months.
Women's basketball will face an opportunity to square off against the league's newest member as the No. 2 seed since the Eagles enter next week's tournament as its No. 3-seeded team.
