Strong start, new career highs and impressive finish propels Keelhaulers to victory
VALLEJO, Calif. – By outscoring Stanton 17-6 in the first quarter of Saturday's Cal Pac Conference game at PEAC Main Gym, Cal Maritime created all the cushion it needed to secure a victory against the Stanton Elks as they held the lead for the rest of the evening in a game it won, 72-55.
The Keelhaulers started the second half strong by outscoring the Elks, 15-9, and never stopped playing aggressive on both ends as they ended the game with a plus-eight scoring advantage in the fourth quarter alone.
As a team, Cal Maritime shot 48.2 percent overall and 38.1 pct. from three compared to the Elks who finished with respective shooting clips of 34.5 pct. and 31.6 pct.
Emily Newton shined all night long as she shot a blistering 8-for-12 overall and canned 6 of 9 attempts from three to finish with a game-high 23 points, setting new single-game career highs for field goals made, three-pointers made and points.
Combined with Suraya Lloyd who matched a career high by finishing with 16 points, the two finished with one more point than Stanton combined through three quarters.
On the other side of the floor, Cal Maritime's defense forced 30 turnovers, which led to 21 points.
The Keelhaulers will take a brief break from Cal Pac play to host Northwest Indian College Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. before facing the Elks again in this season's return game next Saturday in Fullerton.
