Santos, McMurray lead by Keelhaulers in home opener vs. Simpson
VALLEJO, Calif. – Aysia Santos finished with a team-high 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting and hit 5 of 7 free throws in Friday's designated non-conference game at PEAC Main Gym against Simpson and Aliviyah McMurray ended her home debut with 19 points but a strong first half from Simpson helped the visitors build a lead too large for Cal Maritime to overcome in a game the Red Hawks won, 85-71.
Cal Maritime ends its inaugural weekend of the season with a 1-1 record, Simpson will open the year with a 1-0 mark.
McMurry canned 6 of 11 shots from the floor and all six free throw attempts; Tamana added seven points with her game-high 11 rebounds in her first home game in blue and gold.
By shooting 54 percent throughout the first quarter, Simpson entered the second period with a 20-point lead. When Cal Maritime built scoring runs to trim that down to a reasonable margin, the Red Hawks responded with scoring runs of their own.
Even though Cal Maritime outscored Simpson by two in the third period and ended the game with a 24-point fourth quarter, it simply ran out of time even though they held the Red Hawks to 15 points in the final period.
After opening the season with two games within 24 hours, women's basketball is off until November 4 when OUAZ visits PEAC Main Gym for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference clash.
Even though both teams in Friday's game compete within the Cal Pac Conference, this was a designated non-conference matchup.
