VALLEJO, Calif. – Entering the final week of the season, a lot is unknown throughout the California Pacific Conference since conference seeding is still up in the air with the final set of regular season games remaining.
Before its regular-season finale, Cal Maritime will start the week against its conference rivals with an opportunity to sweep the three-game season series at Angwin Thursday night.
In December's home non-conference matchup, the Keelhaulers topped the Pioneers by six points. Exactly one month later, the two squared off against each other in Vallejo in a game that ended with an eight-point victory.
Depending on the results of that matchup — Cal Maritime fans would love nothing more than to celebrate another win — the conference's attention will focus on what takes place inside PEAC Main Gym because that is where Simpson, the league leaders entering the week, will travel to Vallejo to play a game with regular-season title and playoff implications.
Simpson won the series opener in Redding on January 21 in Cal Maritime's conference road opener; Saturday is the Keelhaulers' chance to defend their home court, secure a split of the season's series and defeat the Red Hawks for the first time since January 18. 2025, and the first time at home since February of 2020.
Simpson will not play a game before meeting the Keelhaulers since its Senior Night took place last Saturday versus Stanton. Shortly after that game concludes, league officials will now who will play each other in the opening round of the Cal Pac Men's Basketball Championships, hosted by Cal Maritime.
In one of two men's games scheduled for February 27, Pacific Union will play the #3-seeded team due to the institution's Sabbath observance.
With only four league games this year, Northern New Mexico is in good position for a bye to the semifinal round given their wins over the bottom three teams in the current standings (Westcliff, Stanton, Pacific Union). However, its status will have to be finalized by the tournament seeding committee, pending the outcome of the regular season, including the Cal Maritime/Simpson clash next Saturday.
Simpson is in a solid position to receive one of two byes to the semifinals and controls its own destiny. A win Saturday at Cal Maritime likely will put it in the top spot. However, that could change with a loss to Cal Maritime because those two teams have the potential to hold identical three-loss seasons.
Simpson did beat Northern New Mexico head-to-head, but Cal Maritime did not face the Eagles and could hold a tiebreaker edge over the Red Hawks depending on their two games this week.
Westcliff climbed into bye contention last Thursday with an upset win at Simpson but promptly dropped out with a loss at Pacific Union. The Warriors are currently the fourth seed and face Stanton in their final game of the regular season Saturday night. Depending on the results of Cal Maritime's games. Westcliff has the potential to become the third seed.
Stanton could also climb up to #3 if the Elks beat Westcliff and Cal Maritime falls twice. That would create a three-team five-loss logjam with those three each beating the other once; as of the timing of this release, the ensuing tie-break maelstrom contains too many factors at this point to predict.
The Conference office and the seeding reviewers have a set of guidelines based on NAIA selection criteria. The primary factors are all reviewed concurrently. While Conference record is likely a dominant factor with an imbalanced schedule, factoring in the following criteria can be considered equally:
- Conference Record
- Tiebreakers
- head to head
- results versus other teams in standings order
- road results
- defensive head-to-head scores
- Overall record
- NAIA RPI, as of February 16
