VALLEJO, Calif. – Following weeks of training since arriving to campus before the start of the fall semester, Cal Maritime's men's and women's cross country teams will commence the 2023 season at a familiar location when the Keelhaulers head to Rocklin to compete in the second-annual Jessup Invitational, hosted by Jessup University.

The men will begin their trek around Jessup's on-campus 8k course at 9:15 a.m.; a 9:55 a.m. start is scheduled for the women's 5k race.

Not only is Saturday's meet the first of the year for both CSUM cross country teams, the Jessup Invitational will double as the inaugural meet under new head coach Francisco Gomez.

Running for the men is a group that includes five freshmen making their debut appearance as a Keelhauler and a combined five upperclassmen, led by the team's lone senior, James Whitney.

Mia Rathsack, a women's soccer cadet-athlete, and former women's basketball cadet-athlete Anjali Sharma lead a women's roster that includes three first-year runners and a seasoned returner in junior Safari Frisell.

The 2023 men's and women's roster is comprised by 13 and seven cadet-athletes, respectively; both teams will travel to the same three meets leading up to the Cal Pac Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship, slated for October 30 in Fresno, California.

Off next week, both teams will head to Golden Gate Park on October 6 for the SF State Invitational, hosted by San Francisco State, followed by Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational on October 14.

Since 16 days sit between the Bronco Invitational and the league's year-end postseason meet, that respite provides Coach Gomez with an opportunity to squeeze in one more meet as a final tune-up for the men and women's prior to facing other Cal Pac foes at the end of the month in Woodward Park.
