FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal Maritime led Stanton 16-15 after one quarter of play in the team's first game at the HIU Holiday Classic, hosted by Stanton, but it was the Keelhaulers' second quarter defense that led to a 70-40 victory.
In that period, Cal Maritime outscored the Elks by 21 points; for the first time in program history, women's basketball held an opponent scoreless for an entire quarter.
Tamana Sharifi led the Keelhaulers with 19 points and 16 rebounds, both season highs; Emily Newton finished with 14 points; Suraya Lloyd and Aysia Santos ended their day with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Cal Maritime will end 2025 against the tournament host, Hope International, in Thursday afternoon's 1 p.m. matchup.
