VALLEJO, Calif. – Currently at the midpoint of the Cal Pac season, Cal Maritime is one of four teams that hold a highly coveted playoff berth for this year's Cal Pac Conference Men's Soccer Championship, and face an opportunity to distance itself from Simpson thanks to Thursday's 12 p.m. meeting.
With last month's victory over the Red Hawks in this season's series opener at Bodnar Field, the Keelhaulers placed themselves in the driver's seat for postseason competition because that victory is the difference between a playoff appearance and missing the tournament, if the season ended on the date of this release.
A victory enables Cal Maritime to extend their cushion over Simpson with three league contests remaining: next week's games at Stanton and Westcliff followed by its Halloween home finale against Pacific Union.
With each team keeping one eye on the Cal Pac standings, every game is an important one since only two weeks remain in the regular season.
Even though men's soccer has not won a game at Simpson in program history, it did not win a home game against the Red Hawks either until September's matchup in Vallejo.
