VALLEJO, Calif. — Men's hoops' first home game of 2026 is its final opportunity to prep for Cal Pac Conference play when UC Santa Cruz visits PEAC Main Gym for Monday night's 7 p.m. non-conference game.
This is the first of two head-to-head matchups taking place this season with the Keelhaulers visiting the Banana Slugs' home court on February 14.
Monday's home game is the final one before the start of league action on January 17 when conference rival Pacific Union heads to Vallejo for each team's opening league contest.
Men's basketball is still in the process of returning to the rhythm and routine provided by the season because this game against UCSC is only the second played in the last 25 days due to the holiday break. The other event within that block of time took place on January 3 at Lincoln (CA).
The Keelhaulers are also the Slugs' second opponent of the new year since the team will visit Pomona-Pitzer Saturday night before making the short trek, by comparison, to Cal Maritime.
Entering its first set of games in 2026, the final eight games of '25 all took place on the road, UCSC won three of its last four with a loss at USC taking place after a win against Pomona-Pitzer and victories against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
This series has been competitive from the start when Cal Maritime and UC Santa Cruz first faced off on November 24, 1992. Even though the Banana Slugs lead the all-time series, 10-9, the Keelhaulers won the last two meetings in 2019, in Santa Cruz, and 2023 in Vallejo.
Against UCSC, Cal Maritime won 3 of 7 games at home, 4 of 10 on the road and both played at a neutral site.
The first homestand of 2026 will end on January 18 versus Cal Miramar, just over 19 hours after facing Pacific Union the night before. Starting with that rivalry game against the Pioneers, the Keelhaulers will play four games, two at home and two on the road, within eight days.
