Keelhaulers repeat Players of the Week award sweep
VALLEJO, Calif. – Throughout its recorded history, Cal Maritime never swept the California Pacific Conference's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards until last week's announcement by league officials. The program did not have to wait nearly as long to repeat this feat because another pair of Keelhaulers captured the conference's weekly awards when Nick Stone and Lawrence Long earned Offensive and Defensive accolades, respectively, when this weeks awards unveiling took place.
This is the first time in school history Cal Maritime won both honors in consecutive weeks.
Last week he won Defensive Player of the Week, this week Stone took home Offensive honors by setting two new career highs at La Sierra last Sunday.
The Sacramento native led the team with 19 points and canned five shots from three to set new career bests in both categories. His threes were nearly half of his team's total as the other 11 players sank six from distance combined.
The sophomore guard's night at La Sierra was an efficient one because he shot 41 percent overall and from three-point range.
Long, who hails from Oakland, was just as effective as his teammate on the defensive half of the court since that was where he collected 10 of his career-high 13 rebounds.
Responsible for more than one-fourth of his team's rebound total (41), Monday's announcement was the first weekly honor earned by Long, last season's All-Cal Pac Second Team selection, and the second earned by Stone, the reigning Cal Pac Freshman of the Year.
Cal Maritime will look to match its best start in program history when it heads to Anaheim to face the Bethesda Lion Angels in Friday's 6 p.m. non-conference matchup.
