Keelhaulers ink Landon Courtman out of Santa Rosa

Landon Courtman, an athletic 6'7", 215 forward, will be transferring from Santa Rosa Junior College to play at Cal Maritime. Courtman will enroll as a junior and have two years of eligibility at Cal Maritime.

The Healdsburg native started his collegiate career at Westmont College but transferred to Santa Rosa after taking a year off for a medical redshirt.

"I am a very emotional player," said the junior college transfer. "I wear my heart on my sleeve. I drive to the basket a lot, I'm able to take shots outside and defend really well. I like defense because it links everyone together as a team and you really have to be communicating on the court. On offense, it kind of flows, you're able to somewhat do your own thing but on defense, you really have to be a unit and I like that."

The incoming junior originally applied to Cal Maritime for the fall 2020 semester, but the uncertainty of the pandemic made Courtman decide to take the year off and be ready for the following school year. He stayed in touch with Cal Maritime Head Coach Tim Bross throughout the school year, finally getting the opportunity he wanted.

"I originally started looking into Cal Maritime and applied for the fall 2020 semester," Courtman said. "I ended up not following through with all of the craziness going on. I decided to reach out to Coach Bross and started communicating with him. I really like Cal Maritime because of the smaller classrooms, the teacher-to-student ratio, and just the nice, overall campus that they have. I've heard a lot of good things about it from people that have gone here."

Head Coach Tim Bross is eager to add Courtman to the fold. "We are excited to add Landon to our roster," Bross said. "He comes from a strong Santa Rosa Junior College program, and is a talented young man who will add depth and experience to our frontcourt."

Courtman averaged 5.1 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting 51% from the block and 25% from three at Santa Rosa JC. He was a part of the Bearcubs "Elite Eight" run in the CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association) State Tournament his freshman season in 2018-2019.

"Going into the recruitment process, I was just trying to figure out the best fit not only in terms of basketball but academically too." Courtman added."I wanted to find out about the coaches and the program as much as I could. I looked into the history of Cal Maritime's athletic programs and I was impressed. Just the communication and getting the wrinkles ironed out of the whole process has been good with Coach Bross. I'm looking forward to meeting all of the guys on the team, how the practices are, and how we grow."

The forward will be majoring in oceanography in the fall of 2021 and is believed to be the first of the Men's Basketball Program to study in Cal Maritime's newest major. He has a personal goal to help out the environment, wanting to lend a hand in helping save the world one day at a time.

"I have a goal that I want to do something that is going to help the environment and help the world repair from all of the changes that we are seeing in recent years," said the future oceanography major. "There's a lot of controversies but I'm looking to become more knowledgeable and figure out some sort of plan to help. I'm excited to learn more about the ocean because I don't know too much about boats and I know that's a big part of the culture here so I'm excited to venture into something new."
