VALLEJO, Calif. – Fans of Cal Maritime Women's Water Polo will not have to wait much longer for the start of the 2025 season because this weekend includes the first matches of the new season.
The inaugural tournament of the year will take place on campus at PEAC Pool and is one of two events the Keelhaulers will host this year. UC Davis will host the Collegiate Water Polo Association's second tournament in February with CSUM hosting the Sierra Pacific Division Championship in late March.
Cal Maritime's first set of official team practices commenced at the start of the academic year just a few weeks ago, which makes this weekend's tournament a perfect opportunity for head coach Matt De Trane and the team an opportunity to see how much progress took place throughout January and what elements to improve on throughout the upcoming weeks.
Last year, women's water polo won consecutive CWPA Tournaments, in as many weeks, showcasing the program's skill level and potential for success in future seasons – like the one that starts Saturday on campus.
Visiting Vallejo for this weekend's inaugural CWPA Tournament are Cal, Chico State, Nevada, UC Davis with the pair of UC schools sending two teams each.
The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning with Cal Maritime facing UC Davis (B) in the inaugural Sierra Pacific Division match of the new year. Teams will play twice each day with the Keelhaulers returning to the water at noon against Chico State.
Sunday's CSUM slate versus Cal starts at noon against its A team and concludes against the Golden Bears' B squad in the tournament's 3:30 p.m. finale
