VALLEJO, Calif. – Even though Cal Maritime competed in a pair of tough matches on Saturday, a berth in the Sierra Pacific Division Championship's third place game is at stake when women's water polo returns to PEAC Pool on Sunday for its 9:15 a.m. match against Chico State.
The winner of that contest will face Cal at 12:30 p.m.
In Saturday's Sierra Pacific Division Championship opener, Cal scored all three goals recorded by either team in the first period and saw the Keelhaulers score three of their own following halftime. But the Golden Bears withstood CSUM's charge by earning the only two goals scored in the fourth period to defeat the tournament hosts, 12-4.
Those results snapped the team's eight-game win streak since the Keelhaulers entered the playoffs as tournament champions in their two preceding events.
Ryan Wallace found the back of the cage in the second period for CSUM and recorded another goal in the third; Lanni Hardin and Olivia Larwood were responsible for their team's other goal.
In the back half of the Keelhaulers' doubleheader, Wallace recorded the team's lone goal, snapping UC Davis' 12-goal scoring run in a game it won, 13-1, to clinch spot in the tournament's championship match.
The Aggies will square off against UC Santa Cruz (A) for the league's postseason title and automatic berth in the national tournament.
