VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime's season-opening six-game homestand will continue Saturday morning when the Jessup Warriors visit Bodnar Field for an 11a.m. matchup against the Keelhaulers. This is the first of back-to-back contests against Division II opposition to prepare women's soccer for its September 27 Cal Pac opener against Simpson.

For Cal Maritime, Saturday's game is the second of six straight at home, a block of action that includes the team's entire non-conference slate and the first three of four events against Cal Pac opposition.

Following its game against Jessup, women's soccer will face a near-two-week hiatus to prepare for its final pre-conference tune-up against Menlo, a valuable opportunity for a team that starts every season at a disadvantage compared to its colleagues throughout the NAIA and NCAA.

Unlike other institutions that begin official practices at the start of August, Cal Maritime's schedule is handcuffed by the unique need to complete summer cruise on the T.S. Golden Bear or commercial cruise to fulfill international experience or hours at sea — requirements tied to respective majors and necessary to earn an undergraduate degree at this institution.

While other schools are working their way into shape, learning schemes, plays and building chemistry throughout the month of August, Cal Maritime's initial opportunity to enjoy that same opportunity does not take place until the start of September once players are cleared to participate in these activities.

Non-conference games, and practices that take place between those events, are even more vital to a team that most remain in shape on its own during the summer, compared to other programs that conduct organized workouts; head coach Mike Bielski strategically organizes each workout to ensure players are in shape and know everything they need to compete before the start of league play.

While the goal is to win games before Cal Pac action commences, the goal for women's soccer, like its male counterpart, is to avoid injury and feel comfortable playing with one another to enjoy the same situation 99% of other teams experience when they take the field for respective season openers.
