VALLEJO, Calif. — Coming off one of the most impressive overall performances during the Imhotet Amen-Ra era, Cal Maritime will take momentum generated from last week's win against its league rival into PEAC Main Gym for Thursday's 5:30 matchup versus Simpson.
For the final time this year, the Keelhaulers will travel for a conference matchup when it heads to UC Merced Saturday afternoon; tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
Including Thursday's game against the Red Hawks, four of the team's final five Cal Pac games are home events.
Currently sitting fifth in the conference standings one game behind Westcliff, the Keelhaulers' stretch run begins against the league's top two teams since UC Merced and Simpson enter the week in first and second place. However, third-place La Sierra sits third with a two-game advantage over CSUM, a deficit that any league team can realistically erase in the final weeks of the season.
The league's top-four teams will compete in the Cal Pac's year-end Women's Basketball Championship.
Cal Maritime is one of the conference's top-three offenses, it will face the other two throughout the week. The only team scoring more than that Keelhaulers this season (63.1 points per game) is UC Merced (69.2 ppg) with Simpson averaging 61.8 ppg.
Playing a strong influence in each team's scoring average is their overall shooting success: UC Merced's .391 field goal percentage leads the league, ahead of Simpson's .388 and Cal Maritime's .368 shooting clips.
The Bobcats will begin this week's schedule on a seven-game overall win streak; Simpson won five of the last six played.
With the rest of the league facing one another and creating space in the conference standings throughout the final weeks of the year, it is undeniable that Cal Maritime, and its home-heavy Cal Pac slate, is an advantage compared to its counterparts.
Visiting Vallejo in subsequent weeks are Westcliff (next Thursday), La Sierra (next Saturday) and Pacific Union in CSUM's Senior Day season finale on February 22.
