VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime will return to San Pedro, California, seeking its ninth Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup title when competition commences on March 6 in San Pedro, California, at the annual Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup, co-hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club and Cal Maritime Athletics/Cal Poly Maritime Academy.
In addition to the Keelhaulers, USC, College of Charleston — those three teams receive automatic bids as the event host, defending regatta champion and Kennedy Cup champion, respectively — Cal Poly, Hawaii, Maine Maritime Academy, Navy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the University of Victoria will visit Southern California for this three-day 10-race regatta.
These 10 teams will test the challenging waters of the Pacific at Pt. Fermin, located next to the Los Angeles Yacht Club, aboard a fleet of identical Catalina 37s – the same one-design keelboats utilized in the prestigious Congressional Cup regatta.
Point Fermin Park on Paseo Del Mar and Cabrillo Beach provide excellent viewing locations for spectators.
Since its inaugural race in 2008, 166 teams and over 1,500 student-athletes competed in the 16-race history of the Harbor Cup; competition did not take place in 2021 due to COVID-19.
With eight championships to its credit, no school hoisted the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup Perpetual Trophy more than Cal Maritime, one of two universities (Navy is the other) that competed in every regatta in the event's history.
Participating teams are selected from a large pool of applicants each year; invitees are fully hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club members with housing and meals provided for all student-athletes and coaches.
This year's regatta also includes a Saturday night dinner for participating teams, LAYC members and VIPs featuring Commodore of the San Diego Yacht Club and Vice Commodore of Transpacific Yacht Club Allison Bell as its keynote speaker.
