VALLEJO, Calif. – Three weeks after opening the spring season in Long Beach, California, at the Rose Bowl Regatta, Cal Maritime's dinghy student-athletes will head to San Diego to compete in the Jeff Simon Memorial Open.
Schools can enter multiple boats to compete in the Open regatta; two boats will represent the Keelhaulers throughout the weekend. In all, 26 boats from nine schools will compete at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. In addition to Cal Maritime, Arizona State, Cal Poly, San Diego State, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA and USC will compete at this annual event hosted by UC San Diego.
When the Keelhaulers return home, they will take a week-long break before heading to Central California to defend their Mustang Open title.
That competition will open a busy month of February for Cal Maritime since there are four regattas scheduled throughout a three-week timespan. If you include the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup, five combined dinghy and offshore events will take place in six weeks.
