Third place at the Fall PCCSC Championship caps successful fall season

VALLEJO, Calif. –
Six top-three finishes throughout the Fall PCCSC Championship led to third place for Cal Maritime in its final regatta of the fall season.

The Keelhaulers started the weekend with a pair of fifth-place and results; after it placed fourth to wrap-up the first round of racing, it quickly separated itself from the rest of the field and became one of a few teams that would challenge Stanford for the regatta's championship throughout a weekend filled with rain and light winds.

"I was impressed with how the entire team kept their focus and remained motivated in very challenging conditions", said assistant coach Renee Corpuz-Lahne. "The team knew going into the event that competition would be challenging with many talented sailors in attendance.

"The game plan involved consistent finishes in the single digits, and they were able to execute," added Corpuz-Lahne.

Following Saturday's racing, the Keelhaulers were one of three teams that placed themselves in championship contention as they entered Sunday's races in third behind regatta host UC Santa Barbara and the first place Cardinal.

A third-place finish in one of Sunday's races provided the highlight of the day as the top three teams ended up finishing in that exact order for the regatta, with the Keelhaulers enjoying a stellar weekend of racing to finish heads and shoulders above such teams as USC, Cal, Washington, UCLA, Arizona State, Hawaii and a San Diego State coming off last weekend's championship-clinching effort at the West Coast Championship.

With Cal Maritime finishing third in the JV regatta as well after climbing the leaderboard from seventh place entering Sunday's schedule, the league's championship event provided the perfect ending for another successful semester of racing.

"In foul conditions with light wind, members of the JV team buckled down and focused on the right things to improve its position within the overall standings, and that  led to a string of top-five race finishes and one of the most impressive performances from any of the 29 teams on Sunday," said Corpuz-Lahne.

Respective finishes clinched berths at the Rose Bowl Regatta, hosted by USC in Long Beach during the first weekend of the new calendar year. This annual competition provides a firsthand look at East Coast-based competition the Keelhaulers will face throughout the spring season.

"Of the 11 student-athletes who competed throughout the weekend in both regattas, everyone did a fantastic job throughout the entire weekend," said head coach Kerry Deaver.

"Everyone sailed consistently and placed the program in position to compete for the fall championship on Sunday." Added Deaver, "you cannot win a championship on any given race, but you can definitely lose one, and we gave ourselves a chance to win this title throughout the entire weekend in both the Varsity and JV regattas."

Since this event concluded the fall portion of the team's schedule, student-athletes will enter a lengthy hiatus that will allow everyone to prepare for their final exams, papers and projects since the team will not return to competition until the Rose Bowl Regatta.

"I learned quickly that Cal Maritime student-athletes take their academic responsibilities as seriously as their sailing. That is why I shape the schedule of races accordingly so they can successfully balance both."

Added Deaver, "the feedback I receive from the students has been nothing but positive, they appreciate the opportunity to focus on sailing when it is time to do so, yet fully concentrate on their classwork during appropriate times of the semester.

The Fall PCCSC Championship marked the fifth top-five regatta result of the semester, a total that includes a championship-winning performance at the Stoney Burke Intersectional, a regatta Cal Maritime won by 20 points and included a stellar second-place showing by underclassmen competing in the JV regatta.

When one includes how the team performed at the UCSD Open and PCCSC Richard Sweet Match Race Championship, two regattas where the Keelhaulers narrowly missed out on returning home with addition championship hardware for their trophy case.

"This team has some real talent and depth with mostly freshmen and sophomores who are being led by junior Nick Mueller.  After this weekend, other teams know we can play at the top and I am confident the team will continue to execute next semester as it did throughout the fall," said Corpuz-Lahne.

Mueller provided another highlight for the program when he became the first Keelhauler in school history to win the PCCSC Singlehanded Open Championship, earning a repeat appearance in the National Singlehanded Open Championship, against the country's top student-athletes, for the second year in a row.

Results this semester only strengthened Cal Maritime's reputation as one of the top offshore and dinghy sailing programs in the nation, even though the institution's student body is a fraction compared to school it competes against on a regular basis.

Combined with the program's unique training situation — student-athletes cannot practice on campus, as it has in the past, since its boat basin is closed for pier construction for the institution's new training vessel that is slated for arrival next November — this semester's success truly showcases the talent that is infused throughout the program.

Said Deaver, "I am proud of how everyone remained unfazed by challenges it faced throughout the semester and responded to each situation like a professional. It's not easy to travel an hour a day just to practice, especially since students are balancing anywhere from 18-24 units this semester.

"I hope everyone enjoys some well-deserved time off during the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to campus and focusing their time and efforts towards a successful finals week."
