VALLEJO, Calif. – The start of the 2025-26 season has been a positive one for Cal Maritime with Nick Mueller clinching a spot at next month's National Singlehanded Championship and a third-place finish last weekend — a regatta that showcased the Keelhaulers' elite young talent since a freshman skipper led a team that was one of only two boats to defeat Stanford in head-to-head competition.
This weekend, Cal Maritime returns to San Diego to face a deep field competing in the UCSD Open, hosted by UC San Diego at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. In addition to the host school and the Keelhaulers, Arizona State, Cal, Cal Poly, Cal State Channel Islands, San Diego State, Santa Barbara City College, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz and USC will head south for this two-day regatta.
Since this event allows unlimited entries for the varsity competition — UCSD will also host a separate frosh/soph regatta — 24 boats will battle for Open's title.
Teams will race PCCSC-legal FJs throughout the weekend, first start is scheduled for 11 a.m. both days.
This is the second of four-consecutive regattas scheduled throughout the month of October: Cal Maritime will compete at the Stoney Burke Intersectional next weekend followed by the Women's Fall PCCSC Championship and Top-9 Invite the weekend of the 25th.
