Keelhaulers end Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup with a race win, pair of top-two finishes
SAN PEDRO, Calif. – Cal Maritime ended the Port Of Los Angeles Harbor Cup, a three-day 10-race regatta in San Pedro, on a positive not by recording a bullet in Saturday's final race, the event's eighth, and started Sunday's competition by finishing second in the event's penultimate race to end its weekend eighth overall.
Those were two of three top-two results for the Keelhaulers throughout the weekend, one that started in challenging fashion for CSUM when Friday's opening race finished with an OCS for its crew.
Even though Cal Maritime battled valiantly throughout the rest of the event, that tough start made it challenging for the Keelhaulers to climb the leaderboard throughout the rest of the weekend.
With six top-three finishes to its credit. USC captured first place with a bullet in the fourth race and maintained that position for the final five races to win its first Harbor Cup crown.
The Harbor Cup was the final offshore race of the academic year for the Keelhaulers who will face a 13-day hiatus from competition until their dinghy student-athletes return to the water on March 22, in Long Beach, to compete in the PCCSC South Designate, hosted by USC at the US Sailing Center.
