Two second-place race finishes highlight Keelhaulers’ weekend at the Kennedy Cup

Final Results

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Second-place results in two of the eight races that took place in Annapolis, Maryland, highlighted Cal Maritime's race weekend at Chesapeake Bay/Severn River — site of the annual Kennedy Cup, hosted by Navy.

The first five of those races took place on Saturday and saw CSUM record a pair of fourth-place finishes. After sailing placed second in the inaugural race of the weekend, three of the next four races between the field of 10 competitors saw the Keelhaulers finish among the top five.

Based on that strong Saturday performance, Cal Maritime entered the final day of racing in fourth, within striking distance of the College of Charleston who sat atop the leaderboard.

The Cougars ended up leading the regatta from start to finish as the Keelhaulers finished second in one race, and sixth in the event's final two to secure fifth overall, just three points behind a U.S. Merchant Marine crew that snatched fourth place from CSUM based on the results from the weekend's final race.

Even though the Kennedy Cup was the final offshore race of the fall, the team will return to action November 16-17 to compete at the PCCSC Fall Championship in Santa Barbara. Between its appearances in Annapolis and Santa Barbara, the final regatta for CSUM during the fall semester, Nick Mueller will compete in the National Open Singlehanded Championship, hosted by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, Florida, next weekend.
