Cal Maritime finishes fourth at Fall Pacific Coast Dinghy Championship
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Even though action was postponed briefly until a permanent breeze arrived in Santa Barbara, 10 total races took place during the Fall Pacific Coast Dinghy Championship.
At the end of this event, Cal Maritime defeated numerous Division I programs, a list that includes UCLA, USC, Cal, Arizona State, Cal Poly, UC San Diego, San Diego State and UC Davis, to capture fourth-place, narrowly missing a podium finish, with 81 team points.
"Nobody on the team felt satisfied being knocked off the podium by such a small margin, especially after the Kennedy Cup victory," said senior Kyle Collins. "Everyone walked away with plenty of lessons learned and motivation to continue working hard at practice. We are all looking forward to the next opportunity to represent Cal Maritime."
The host Gauchos won the event with 39 points, following by Stanford (52) and Hawai'i (79).
Cal Poly finished fifth (134), followed by Western Washington (136), UCSD (143), UCLA (150), San Diego State (152) and USC (154). Rounding out the bottom five were UC Santa Cruz (178), Cal (180), UC Davis (181), Arizona State (241) and CSU Channel Islands (262).
However, Cal Maritime's JV1 and JV2 B rotations earned first and second place, respectively, in their division, With the Varsity C team capturing third, six of the 14 sailors that traveled to Santa Barbara placed on the podium individually.
The Keelhaulers will now enter a lengthy hiatus that ends on January 8, 2022, when they head to Long Beach, California, to compete in the Rose Bowl.
