Bio
Former Saint Patrick-Saint Vincent High School JV head coach, varsity assistant coach and Cal Maritime women's soccer assistant coach Mike Carvalho completed his sixth season leading the men's soccer program, in 2025, after Director of Athletics Karen Lee Yoder selected him for that position in October, 2020.
Throughout his career, Carvalho coached hundreds of players at the youth and adult levels, worked with over 30 clubs and high school teams that won three State Cups and several league championships.
"Players need to understand not only the roles and responsibilities of each position," explained Carvalho, "but how all positions work together to defend opponents' attacks, and how to transition into an attack that creates scoring opportunities."
The Benicia resident added, "I want to develop a program where I can build on the talents and skills of our new and returning players by creating a structured soccer program. I hope to accomplish this by implementing a methodology of predictive play, constant player communication on and off the field, and using the best practices in technical, tactical, and systemic soccer training. I believe every player needs to become a student of the game.
"As head coach, I am looking forward to leading this fine group of cadets and teaching our players a game I truly love and appreciate."
Carvalho, a Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and Western Governor’s University alum, obtained all three United Soccer Coach Credentials — the NSCAA National Diploma, the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and the NSCAA Premier Diploma — in addition to a Master Coach Diploma, the highest United Soccer Coaches certification.
He also earned his U.S. Soccer Federation referee license 2007.
Outside of his coaching duties and responsibilities, Carvalho is the IT Manager of the infrastructure team at AC Transit in Oakland. In the off-season, you can find him refereeing high school games throughout the Bay Area.
